Mumuki Tango Quintet was formed in 2009 by a group of people studying together at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw - Mikołaj Stolarski (accordion), Kaja Nowak (violin), Jacek Siemiątkowski (guitar), Michał Wiśniowski (double bass) and Łukasz Chrzęszczyk (piano). The starting point for the five musicians was fascination with Astor Piazzolla's work. Their concerts have been received wery warmly by audiences in venues ranging from the Teatr Wielki in Łódź to various cafes and clubs in Warsaw and elsewhere. They have also been awarded a Special Mention at the Chopin Interpretations Festival - Łódź 2010, merging the original Chopin piano pieces with the Tango Nuevo musical style.

Astor Piazzolla, contrary to popular belief, wasn't just a composer of tangos - he became known as the creator of an innovative style in music, a fusion of classical composition techniques, jazz, and traditional Argentinian folk - Tango Nuevo - as called by him. As Fernando Gonzalez wrote: “He retained tango’s poignancy and lyricism while rejecting its tendencies toward sentimentality and bouts of morbid self-pity. He revised its harmonic language by incorporating the influences of Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Giacomo Puccini, and Olivier Messiaen, as well as the occasional nod to the cool jazz of Mulligan and Lennie Tristano. He moved away from the dance floor, but infused the music with a new vitality by using three-part fugues [Piazzolla loved J.S. Bach], a walking bass, jazz-style improvisation, and urgent, brutish accents in echoes of Béla Bartók.” The Nuevo Tango, or - The New Tango - has caught the fancy of musicians as diverse as Gidon Kremer, Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and the Kronos Quartet. And in this distinguished company the Mumuki Tango Quintet find themselves, performing Piazzolla's music in its original shape.

A short film material (in Polish only) done during the Chopin Interpretations Festival - Łódź 2010. Thanks for Ania Kaczmarek and Karol Nasiłowski, who were able to play as fill-ins for Kaja and Michał!
